In
this project, in 2002, were included children of between three and
five
years old, "chosen" on the basis of their socially risky
situation, who for
the most part hailed from extremely deprived areas such as Remedios
de
Escala and Gerli in the Lanùs district of Buenos Aires and
who had been hit
hardest by the long-lasting economic and social crisis.
These
characteristics are actually evident in 88 children and children
who,
with their families, are actively looking for the right path toward
their
future development.
In
the first place the project tries to solve the problem of social
exclusion (arising from the lack of educational possibilities and
stimuli)
to which these children seemed inevitably destined, if we don't
try to
change their day-to-day conditions.
The
Foundation tries to address the nutritional and care needs of our
youngsters and at the same time to combine with the work of their
school to
reach a level of knowledge that we consider necessary to assist
a successful
development.
What
we want to do is to guarantee the principal of equal opportunities
for
all children, offering them the normal possibilities for development
and for
fulfilment of their abilities.
To
reach this target, the Foundation makes an alternative and supplementary
offer, regarding education, to those families indicated for their
socio-economic, sanitary and educational vulnerability, or to working
mothers who also have to bring up families alone.
We
promote intervention on behalf of all parties to the benefit of
the
youngsters, and we seek to reinforce the participation of parents,
families,
district councils and the community during their working lives,
in the
process of improving the quality of their daily lives.
How
do we work?
We
intend to offer an alternative education which is both flexible
and
adapted to suit the environment that we work in. For this reason
the
children are supervised by highly qualified people, and by numerous
volunteers who work with us under the guidance of the Foundation.
Every
morning we accompany the youngsters to a local school where they
will
get a formal education corresponding to the requirements of the
Buenos Aires
regional administration, and where they will get their so-called
"Glass of
milk".
At
midday we take them to the Foundation for lunch. Following that,
they
take part in various activities: physical education, music, creative
or
physical expression, swimming etc. They receive help in the areas
of
phono-audiology, psychology, psycho-education and neuro-psychology.
At
mid-afternoon they have a snack, and before going home they have
a full meal
which alongside breakfast and lunch makes up at least 75 per cent
of the
calories that they need in a day, and almost 100 per cent of their
daily
nutritional requirements.
